David Goodman-Smith's double-barreled surname is a concatenation of his British and American ancestry. Whilst this and his schooling either side of the Atlantic bespeak the old alliance, his personal history links these two great western traditions to China's. After being raised in Hong Kong, David schooled in the UK and the US, graduating from Santa Clara University with a degree in Chinese history, before returning to the Far East to live and work in Yingkou, China. Responsibilities have driven him back to the US, but in choosing to live in San Francisco, one of the most western of America's cities, ironically enough he is as close as you can get to his cherished East.
