China Travel News
STOP PRESS: Massive Tourism Growth To China

The USA and China agreed last week to increase airline landing slots FIVEFOLD from 54 to 249 round-trip flights over the next six years.

China has announced that from next year, it will be possible for overseas travelers to purchase their visas at its borders. (We ask you to please not take this for granted however. Firstly, it may not occur to schedule. Secondly, and most likely, this general announcement may conceal qualifications for different types of visas.)

Hotel/Restaurant News

The Jinjiang Group, the Chinese, (supposedly) luxury group, that owns and manages such properties as Shanghai's Peace Hotel, has finally decided on the future of this iconic property. Surprisingly, the Jinjiang Group has opted to employ American hotelier, Christopher Bachran, to manage a hotel refit and operations. Getting the Peace Hotel up to standard within the strictures of a Chinese, state owned company is a Herculanean challenge and we wish him well with this task.

Imperial Tours reports excellent results at all the restaurants at the fabulous, new Three On The Bund lifestyle center in Shanghai. There are four restaurants - New Heights with a casual menu, Laris (whose chef, David Laris, hails from "Mezzo" in London), Jean-Georges Shanghai (whose founding chef, Jean-Georges Vongerichten, is known for the eponymous "Jean-Georges" in Manhattan) and Whampoa Club, a Shanghainese restaurant. We expect that you will soon be reading about these establishments in various travel and lifestyle magazines.

Meanwhile the long-awaited Red Capital Ranch, a newly developed property from Laurence Brahms, owner of the "Red Capital Club" and the "Red Capital Residence", does not cut the mustard for the luxury market. The concept of a luxury resort hotel by the Great Wall remains attractive, but the Red Capital Ranch pitches itself for the medium budget rather than the high end traveler.

Odds N Ends

We are pleased to introduce Master Zhou, the only Chinese jeweler to have ever won De Beers International Diamond Award. Master Zhou uses ancient Chinese wisdom to custom-design jewelry that will provide good fortune.

He uses a guest's date of birth to generate an elemental chart describing the individual - this will show strengths and weaknesses in different areas corresponding to minerals. By so designing jewelry such that it complements the character of the wearer, Master Zhou encourages better performance and fortune for that individual.

Ten Things You May Not Know About Tibet

  • 1) Lhasa's high altitude encourages a faster than normal metabolic rate, resulting in weight loss.
  • 2) Tibetan woodblock-printed notes are some of the most beautiful currency ever made and can still be found for sale in Lhasa antique stalls
  • 3) Tibetans, as in the photo to the left, stick their tongue out to say "Hello!"
  • 4) The favorite drink of Tibetans is a concoction of yak butter, salt and tea. (For such reasons, Imperial Tours has a personal chef accompany its tours to Lhasa.)
  • 5) The first Tibetan kings descended to earth by a rope lowered from heaven.
  • 6) In the seventh century, Tibet possessed the most feared army in Asia, and used it to conquer half of China
  • 7) A Chinese princess, given in tribute to the Tibetan king, chose the site of Lhasa's holiest temple, the Jokhang. (Learn more history in Imperial Tours' specialist lecture on the first morning of the Lhasa tour.)
  • 8) Tibetans write their prayers on tiny slips of paper called "wind horses". Placed inside incense burners, they are carried to the heavens by warm currents of air.
  • 9) Tibetan tantric sages use a ritual dagger, called a "phurba", to pin down evil spirits
  • 10) The world's highest river, mountain and plateau are all in Tibet.
  • Imperial Tours only recommends "Lhasa" for its customers in Tibet. Other Tibetan destinations are well beyond the comfort zone of most luxury clients.

For this reason, Imperial Tours warmly proposes incorporating a 5 day visit to Lhasa within a private tour of China. For more information about Imperial Tours' Lhasa Tour, please telephone Margot Kong on 888 888 1970.
