Cycling Through the Yangshuo Countryside

Riding a bicycle through the Yangshuo area offers one of the most rewarding ways to experience Guangxi’s karst landscape.

The moment you leave the town’s busy streets, the scenery opens into a quiet patchwork of fields, rivers and limestone towers that rise abruptly from the valley floor. The roads and paths are generally flat, making it easy to travel at a gentle pace and take in the surroundings.

Much of the route follows narrow lanes bordered by rice paddies and vegetable plots. Depending on the season, you may see young rice shoots standing in flooded fields, or golden stalks ready for harvest. Farmers work close to the ground, guiding small motorised tillers through the soft soil or tending crops along the raised earth bunds that divide the paddies. Irrigation channels, fed by the Li and Yulong rivers, run beside the paths, their water diverted by simple gates and stone-lined channels that have been maintained for generations.

As you continue, the karst towers become a constant presence. Their steep, weathered faces change subtly with the light, sometimes appearing almost translucent in the morning mist. Between them lie small hamlets of whitewashed houses, often with tiled roofs and enclosed courtyards. You may pass villagers carrying baskets, children cycling to school, or elderly residents sitting in the shade of a banyan tree.

The special touches like private lunches at the base of the limestone mountains in Guilin, to the private bamboo river rafting were spectacular. We will all remember these moments for the rest of our lives!

Crossing the Yulong River, you’ll encounter ancient stone bridges and bamboo rafts drifting quietly downstream. The riverbanks are lined with citrus orchards, and in late autumn the air carries the faint scent of ripening fruit. Waterways reflect the surrounding hills with remarkable clarity, creating the impression of cycling through a landscape doubled in the still water.

Throughout the ride, the pace of rural life remains unhurried. The combination of agricultural activity, traditional villages and dramatic geology makes cycling in Yangshuo an immersive way to appreciate the region’s natural and cultural character.
